Sydney Chinese National Reported Missing - Police Seek Public Assistance

New South Wales Police issued a missing persons notice on July 10, 2025, seeking information regarding Junming Zhou, a 35-year-old Chinese national.

He was last sighted on the morning of Tuesday, July 8, in Randwick, Sydney's eastern suburbs.

Police describe Zhou as:

Asian appearance

Approximately 180cm tall

Slim build

Bald or shaved head

Authorities have expressed concerns for his welfare and note his frequent presence in several Chinese community hubs including Kensington, Fairfield, Hurstville and Sutherland.

The Eastern Beaches Police Area Command is leading investigations. Anyone with information should contact Maroubra Police Station or Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000.

Former Elite University Student - Previously Arrested for Public Firearm Incident

Notably, the missing individual has previous media exposure.

In August 2022, Zhou made headlines when arrested for conducting military-style drills in public while wearing camouflage and carrying what appeared to be a firearm. At the time, reports identified him as a postgraduate student at the University of New South Wales on a student visa.

Police reports indicate Zhou was spotted near Royal National Park wearing full camouflage gear, military helmet, and carrying a gel blaster resembling an actual firearm. He allegedly told officers he was "preparing to join the war in Ukraine."

The incident caused significant public alarm, prompting emergency calls.

While authorities confirmed the weapon was non-lethal, Zhou faced multiple charges due to the misleading nature of his actions, including:

Unauthorized possession of imitation firearm

Carrying prohibited weapons in conservation areas

Related firearm offenses

The case received substantial judicial attention. Following a Sutherland Local Court appearance, Zhou underwent mandatory mental health evaluation which diagnosed depression and sleep disorders (but no mental illness) and confirmed he was receiving psychological treatment.

Considering his clean record, treatment compliance, and community support, the court granted bail under strict conditions:

Residence restriction in Kensington

Mandatory weekly police check-ins

Passport surrender

Complete firearm prohibition

The case was adjourned to September 13, 2022 for further hearing.

Latest Update:
Police have not released additional details but confirm dedicated investigative resources have been deployed. Authorities continue to urge anyone with relevant information to come forward.
