People in Melbourne live better than in Sydney, but neither are the best in the world: report
An international report has revealed the Australian capital where people have the best quality of life, and it’s bad news for the Harbour City.
Sydney might have the warmer weather and prettier beaches but people in Melbourne are living better, according to a Deutsche Bank report.
Melbourne ranked higher than Sydney in Deutsche Bank’s world quality of life rankings for 2019, placing 7th on the list ahead of Sydney at 10th.
The report assesses international cities based on the costs and quality of living for residents, including factors such as commute times, health care, safety, pollution levels, property price to income ratios and cost of living.
But neither Australian city could beat the Swiss city of Zurich, which moved up one spot from last year’s list to be ranked number 1 for best quality of life.
Wellington, New Zealand, was bumped to second place, followed by Copenhagen, Edinburgh, Vienna and Helsinki.
Boston and San Francisco were ranked between Melbourne and Sydney at 8th and 9th place respectively.
As well as quality of life, another important area of analysis in Deutsche Bank’s annual report is salary.
Zurich was knocked out of top spot by San Francisco, where workers can now find the highest salaries in the world.
Sydney and Melbourne came 6th and 9th for highest monthly income and rent costs in the world. They also came 6th and 10th among cities with the most expensive monthly public transport.
The report also broke down the costs of living in the global cities.
Zurich, Oslo and Copenhagen were deemed the most expensive cities for a night out, and Melbourne, Oslo and Sydney were where beer and cigarettes cost the most.
Keen for a coffee? You’ll pay the lowest prices in Milan, Buenos Aires and Rome.
But Milan, Copenhagen and Zurich were found to be the most expensive for a weekend getaway.
Meanwhile, Moscow, Istanbul and New Delhi had the cheapest internet in the world.
