2023.11.21

A council worker has died in a ride-on mower accident at a park on Tasmania's west coast.

Emergency services were called to the Frank Long Memorial Park in Zeehan on Monday afternoon where the the man in his 30s was found under the mower.

He died at the scene.

The West Coast Council said it was shocked by the death, which is being considered a workplace incident.

"The entire community is in shock over this terrible incident," West Coast mayor Shane Pitt said.

"No-one expects their loved ones not to come home from work."

The mayor said the council would provide assistance to those affected.

"We will provide every support necessary to those affected by this tragedy, including the family, friends, and employees and contractors of the council."

As the matter is the subject of a WorkSafe Tasmania inquiry, the council said it would not be appropriate to comment further.

In a statement, WorkSafe Tasmania said the "worker died when the mower lost balance on uneven ground, resulting in the worker becoming trapped under the mower".

"Our thoughts are with the man's family, friends and community."

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
